Philip C. Johnson was a Forest Service entomologist and avid amateur photographer who lived in Missoula, Montana. His collection consists of railroad photographs that he took throughout the West, with many images from the San Francisco Bay area, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia.

The Anaconda claim was located in 1875. In 1881 Marcus Daly discovered the copper vein that began copper mining in Butte, Montana. Philip Cornwell Johnson was born in Oakland, California in 1907. He received a bachelor's degree in foresty and a master's degree in entomology from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.
